Single engineering entrance examAdmission to B.Tech and B.Arch programmes in all engineering colleges of India will be done through a single entrance examination from 2018. As quoted in daily newspaper, HRD ministry said that government has paved the way for implementation of single national entrance examination for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in all Central as well as State government colleges, private and deemed institutions.

According to media report, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has directed All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to conducts single test for engineering on the line of National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET) which is a single national level test for MBBS and BDS admission in medical and dental colleges of India except AIIMS and JIPMER. AICTE is the country’s top body which frames rules and regulations for engineering and technical institutes.

Students seeking admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will have to clear the JEE-Advanced after taking the engineering entrance exam.

At present more than 100 undergraduate engineering entrance exams are conducted apart from JEE Main. The aim behind common entrance examination is to create a transparent admission process which can lessen the fee burden on the students. At present, lakhs of candidates apply for JEE Main, as well as the state and private engineering entrance examination. This leads to heavy investment in application form and counselling fee.

It is also expected that after introducing single admission exam, the seat allocation can also be regulated. There are more than 3300 engineering colleges affiliated to universities and the annual intake capacity is 1.6 million. However, not even half the seats are filled until the end of counselling session.
