Odisha Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) has put a request before Odisha state government to allow 50% admissions to candidates into engineering courses admissions for session 2014-15. The association has requested that half of the seats in the state colleges must be open to candidates belonging to other states than Odisha. Admissions would be made on the seats available via JEE Main 2014.
Association has filed a memorandum which was presented before Chief Minister of Odisha state to allow 50% admissions through JEE Main 2014 as a constructive step towards bringing the state colleges to the level of IIITs and other deemed universities. It may be recalled here that OJEE 2014 has been scrapped for engineering UG admission in the state as from now, JEE Main 2014 will be used to select the candidates. Counselling of these candidates will be however taken by the state counselling committee itself.
OPECA secretary Binod Dash quoted, “this step will eventually fill the vacant seats in the private colleges, who are struggling to survive amidst the increasing volume of colleges and competition. As of now, more than 60% of seats remain vacant in these colleges”. OPECA is current disillusioned with the heavy restrictions imposed such as fee structure, seat intake from which deemed universities and IIITs are free. Presently, only 15% of seats in private colleges can be filled from outside-state candidates. OPECA is in hope that government understands the situation and proposes the reformatory laws soon.
