On Friday, the SC asked JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) to halt the admission process for engineering courses on the basis of JEE Main and JEE Advanced 2017 exams. The apex court has also restrained the high courts across the country from entertaining any writ petitions on this matter.

JEE Advanced 2017 – Bonus Marks Controversy

The IITs had awarded 18 bonus marks (7 marks in Paper 1 and 11 marks in Paper 2) to all candidates for wrong questions in the JEE Advanced 2017 exam. A petition was filed in the apex court by two engineering aspirants to challenge the decision to award bonus marks to all the candidates. In the petition, the candidates alleged that awarding bonus marks to all the candidates, irrespective of whether or not they attempted the ambiguous questions, was wrong. The petitioners also demanded that the counselling should be put on hold and a fresh merit list must be prepared.

JoSAA Counselling

It must be noted that JoSAA has already completed two rounds of JoSAA 2017 counselling and has allotted seats to many engineering aspirants. On July 7, before the SC ordered a stay on counselling, JoSAA had released the list of vacant seats after the Round 2 of counselling. However, with the Supreme Court order, the JoSAA 2017 counselling stands suspended until the issue of bonus marks is resolved.

The Impact of SC Order

The decision to stay the counselling for engineering courses will affect thousands of candidates who are seeking admissions in IIT, NITs, IIITs and other engineering colleges in India. The SC has hinted that it may follow its verdict of 2005 in which it was held that only the candidates who had attempted the wrong question will be awarded the bonus marks. Until the final decision, the future of thousands of engineering aspirants hangs in balance.
