The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are likely to increase the number of intakes from the upcoming academic session. As per media reports, the new IITs might witness a hike in the intake capacity by 1000. Along with the new IITs which includes IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Indore, IIT Mandi and IIT Ropar, some of the older IITs might also slightly increase the number of seats.
At present, all the IITs combined offer 10,998 seats. However, concerns regarding vacant seats rose when 121 seats were left vacant after the seventh round of JEE Advanced counselling this year. The HRD ministry has suggested scrapping unpopular courses in this regard.
As per reports, from 2018, IITs might also reserve special seats for female candidates. Currently, female students comprise just 8% of the total student in the 23 IITs of the country.
Earlier this year, intake of students in many IITs was increased by 400. The Senate of the new IITs is likely to send a new proposal to the Joint Admission Board (JAB) for further increase in the total number of seats in the IITs.
