The establishment of IIT Dharwad to Raichur seems far from reality because there is a high possibility that the IIT, in Dharwad, will become functional from 2016 session. A source from Union HRD ministry has told that the first batch of IIT Dharwad will start next year and the institute will have an intake capacity of 250 candidates. For the time being, the infant IIT will be overseen by IIT Bombay or IIT Hyderabad and will offer courses in computer science and electronics and communication.
“IIT Bombay or IIT Hyderabad will mentor their Dharwad sibling,” as said by an official of HRD.
The recruitment of the faculty and the staff will be handled by the board of governors of IITs and the mentor IIT. For the time being the institute will function from Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) building. However, a 600 acres of land has been finalized for setting up the IIT at Dharwad. The HRD is also aiding WALMI to renovate the building and to build a wall around the 507-acre land.
“WALMI has a 132 acre campus. It has 199 quarters for teaching and nonteaching staff, and it can easily accommodate 500 students. We just have to do some renovation” – said P Rajendra Cholan, Deputy Commissioner (Dharwad).
Beside Dharwad, Raichur and Mysuru were recommended by the state for setting up the institute. The Union was pondering to establish the new IIT in Raichur, as Dharwad already has Karnatak University, Karnataka State Law University and University of Agriculture Sciences. This is the reason that Dharwad is also called as Vidya Kashi and with the establishment of the new IIT, the title will only become richer.
