This year, the GATE organizing committee has decided to do away with physical calculators and introduce virtual calculators for candidates appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2016 that is scheduled to be held from 30 January 2016 to 7 February 2016. As a trial run, the GATE 2016 Virtual Calculator has now been released on the official website of GATE i.e gate.iisc.ernet.in for the practice of students. Candidates appearing for GATE 2016 can, therefore, now familiarize themselves with the Virtual Calculator of GATE 2016 through the website.  The link to the mock version of the virtual calculator has also been provided on our website and candidates may access the same to understand how the virtual calculator functions. In this article, we give you some of the salient features of the GATE 2016 Virtual Calculator.

Salient Features of the GATE 2016 Virtual Calculator

While most students are probably used to the idea of what a physical calculator looks like, the virtual calculator could look very different. It is important, therefore, that students become familiar with the virtual calculator of GATE so that they know how to use it before they are under the time pressure of the test. Some of the main features of the calculator have been explained below:

  •   In the virtual calculator of GATE, all the keys that may be required to do relatively simple mathematical calculations will be displayed on the right hand side.
  • The left hand side of the virtual calculator will display keys that are required for scientific functions and operations.
  • The virtual calculator has separate keys for inverse functions and, therefore, candidates will not be required to press ‘SHIFT’ or ‘INV’ keys.
  • In order to make it easier for students, the virtual calculator also has keys grouped by
  • function type. All the trigonometric functions for example, have been grouped together and the Hyperbolic functions have been grouped separately.
  • The keys for inverse functions have been placed right below the respective functions.
  • The virtual calculator also has two display boxes at the top. The topmost box will simply indicate the sequence of the keys pressed while the box right below it will display the actual values entered or obtained after calculations.
