In a move which will enable the HRD Ministry to move forward with examination reforms, a majority of states on Wednesday gave an ‘in principle approval’ to the new common entrance exam format which will replace the AIEEE and JEE from 2013.
However, the nomenclature can keep. On request from IIT administrators it's been determined that the name of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) can still be used for the Exam instead of the proposed Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Exam(ISEET).
The new JEE and a minimum of 40 per cent weightage to highschool board scores can decide admissions to any or all Central government-run engineering institutes, IITs, NITs, IIITs, from 2013.
This new JEE will be held twice a year, in April/May and November /December, and also the plan is to carry it a minimum of three-four times a year, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said Wednesday.
The new JEE can comprises 2 elements — Main, an objective sort exam to check comprehension, essential thinking and logical reasoning, and Advance to check problem-solving ability in basic science. along they'll indicate a candidate’s scholastic level and aptitude for science and engineering. The scores are valid for 2 years and a student can have three-four attempts to improve the score.
“While the exam will be conducted by the CBSE, the standard of the exam will be maintained with IIT professors and different lecturers devising it,” Sibal said.
Most states expressed appreciation for the new format and said they'd use it for admission to their engineering schools, however Tamil Nadu had reservations. The state provides a hundred per cent weightage to highschool board scores and intends to continue doing thus. Bengal, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry have sought longer to appear into the proposal.
The modalities of the new JEE are found out and also the proposal are taken to the Central Advisory Board of Education and also the IIT Council for final approval.
