Finally, after a gap of three years, the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH) made a beginning to have its permanent campus. Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and Union Minister of State for Human Resources D. Purandeswari have held Bhoomipooja (ground breaking ceremony) on the day of Dasara.
This would be coming up at Kandi village in Medak district, adjoining the National Highway 9, at an estimated cost of Rs. 800 crore.
Phase 1(a) of IITH main campus will be ready by July 2013 and IITH will shift to its main campus in the same month. Thus, from July 2013 all academic activity of the IITH will be conducted on the main campus.
IITH will be a green campus.
“It will have solar fields for energy sufficiency, water harvesting, solid waste management, effluent and water treatment plants, and other aspects which will make the campus environmentally friendly and sustainable,” said Prof. Chandra Sekhar Sharma of IITH.
The first M.Tech. batch would be graduated from IITH in 2011 and the first B.Tech batch will graduate in July 2012. IITH has 767 students, 485 B.Techs., 130 M.Techs., 125 Ph.D.s, 27 M.Sc. By 2017 IITH will have 6000 students, 500 faculty and 500 staff. IITH has 35 sponsored projects at present totaling Rs. 47 crore of sponsored research funding.
The IITH has also established several research centres such as Cyber Physical Systems, X-Materials, Nanotechnology and High Performance Computing.
IITH is one among the new eight IITs started functioning in August 2008. Currently IITH has 767 students in total and offers undergraduate programs (B.Tech.) infour engineering disciplines, M.Sc. in Chemistry and Physics, M.Tech. in six disciplines, and PhD in eleven disciplines.
Two more undergraduate programs are in the offing from next academic year.
The first faculty at IITH joined in 2009 and as of today IITH has 74 faculty members. In a short span of three years IITH has developed state of the art infrastructure for advanced research facilities.
Cross-disciplinary research is becoming a central focus on IITH campus and innovation hubs for X-Materials, Nano-X, Cyber Physical System and Scientific Computing are already in place. Research is a culture among the faculty and students of IITH. This is evident from the 35 research projects ranging between 18 lakhs to 18 crores that are ongoing at IITH.
Today IITH has project funding to the tune of 46 Crores and more than 100 research publications in international journals and conferences to its credit: a significant achievement in a span of 2 years.
IITH has active collaboration with industry which includes DRDO, Hyundai Motors, Mercedes-Benz R&D India, HP, Microsoft Research, Xylinx Research, NICT-Japan, OFS-Alcatel, KDDI Research labs-Japan, CMC, RCI, ANURAG, ELGI, HCL technologies, Redpine, Intel and Dr. Reddy's labs among others.
