Standard of the students at the premier institution has deteriorated because of coaching classes

New Delhi: The faculty at the IIT agree with Infosys founder N R Narayan Murthy on his observation that the standard of the students at the premier institution has deteriorated because of coaching classes.

Backing Murthy on the issue, Sanjeev Sanghi, president of the faculty forum at IIT Delhi, said, "I don't think Murthy is harsh. We do have a problem with the coaching system."

Murthy had said that almost 80 per cent of the IITians lack quality.

Murthy blamed the coaching classes for the lack of quality in the premier engineering institute of the country.

"Thanks to coaching classes, the quality of students entering IITs has gone lower and lower. Save the top 20 per cent who crack the tough IIT entrance exam and can stand among the best anywhere in the world, the quality of the remaining 80 per cent of students leaves much to be desired," said Murthy.

Murthy further stressed on the need of a new system for the selection of students to the IITs.

"They somehow get through the JEE. But their performance in IITs, at jobs or when they come for higher education in institutes in the US is not as good as it used to be. This has to be corrected. A new method of selection of students to IITs has to be arrived at," he said.

This comes even as there's anger within the IIT over what Union Minister Jairam Ramesh had said in July. He had claimed that IIT's teaching faculty was below par.

IITs are good because of the students and not because of the faculty or the research. There is hardly any worthwhile research. The faculty in the IITs is not worldclass, it is the students who are worldclass. So the IITs and the IIMs are excellent because of the quality of the students not because of the quality of research or faculty.
