IT cos vie to recruit from engg campuses

CHENNAI: It's raining jobs on Tamil Nadu campuses. While IT services company Cognizant recruited a record 1,820 students from VIT University in Vellore on Wednesday, other software companies have also picked up pace. The placement season got off to a good start last week with software companies recruiting more than 1,500 students from a single campus.

This has silenced industry experts, who felt the credit downgrade in the US and the poor financial situation of Europe would recall the recession-like scenario two years ago. In 2008 recession in the US spiked placements by more than 30%.

"This number (1,820) is the highest that any company, across industries, has recruited from a single campus across the country. We have not heard of such a record even in other countries," said VIT University chancellor G Viswanathan.
