Free admission sessions at tech institutes

JAIPUR: Government's vision of making Rajasthan a centre for education has not been successful even after two years. Technical education department has permitted the engineering and management colleges to hold 'free admission sessions' due to lukewarm response received during counseling sessions 2011-12 .

Thus, students will be able to seek admission in engineering and management programmes without appearing in entrance exams such as RPET and RMAT.

Vipin Chandra, principal education secretary, said, "The department has already announced the schedule for
free admission sessions." He revealed that over 10,000 seats remained vacant after the first counseling session. At the second session, few seats were filled leaving many new and not-so-well-known colleges with few admissions.
This is the last chance for the colleges to fill up vacant seats for the session. The session will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the colleges have to provide admission to state students, and in the second phase they can take in students from other states.

Of the 73,500 students who appeared in the RPET exams, only 30,000 went to the counseling. But there are 50,038 seats in 150 engineering colleges taken together . Only 2,500 students went to the counseling for management courses. There are 10,000 seats in 134 management colleges.

Experts feel the 'free admission session ' will make the entrance exams irrelevant . "The education department should rethink about holding entrance exams in a situation where students are more than the number of seats," an RTU (Rajasthan Technical University ) official said.
