CHENNAI: City-based SaiRam Engineering College has refuted the article, "Clubs for gays spring up on city campuses" published on July 25, 2011 which quoted a student from the college saying that he had founded a support group for homosexual students. Seeking to clarify their position, college authorities stated that no such club existed in the college and 'this is a completely baseless allegation.'
The college also sought to stress on its high academic ranking by Anna University Chennai. "We are imparting high quality technical education...last year, our college produced 43 University ranks including four gold medals," it said.
"Our college is well known in the academic arena for its academic achievements and grooming students to be well disciplined. "Principal CV Jayakumar said, "We have in our colleges NSS, NCC and YRC units to imbibe in the students a sense of social responsibility and pride and honour. "We have also cultural teams which participate in different events organised by various colleges and won prizes and brought laurels to the college. Our college is one of the most sought after colleges by the public considering various good parameters," he said.
Our correspondent replies: The report that appeared in The Times Of India is a mere reflection of an emerging social trend on campuses and does not indicate the involvement of any college managements or authorities. In fact, the report clearly states that "these clubs do not have the approval of the college authorities and operate in secret."
