Mumbai: Sumegha Garg, the all India girl topper of the gruelling IIT-JEE has now done India proud by racing past the brightest girls from around the world at the international physics Olympiad. She along with four others brought home three pieces of gold and two were awarded silver medals. Garg, who hails from Bhatinda in Punjab, stood eleventh among 393 students. Shubham Mehta and Burli Sai Kiran also bagged golds at the international physics Olympiad in Bangkok. All-India IITJEE 2011 topper Prudhvi Tej and Nisheeth Lahoti brought home silver medals.
“Physics is my passion,” said Sumegha, who had taken private coaching in physics, chemistry and math as she prepared for various engineering entrance exams. “Sumegha has done us proud. She has done better than all the other students from India. She was extremely focused even during the preparation stage,” said professor Vijay Singh, national co-ordinator for science Olympiads. The four students who represented India at the international chemistry Olympiad in Chinese Taipei were Dipartaka Hait from Kolkata and Dravyunsh Sharma from Ghaziabad, who bagged two gold medals, Smarak Maity from Mumbai who received a silver and Anant Pushkar from Bokaro who brought home a bronze medal. In all, 270 students from 70 countries participated. “Dipartaka was among the youngest in the team. He has just cleared his class XI. Students representing India in the chemistry Olympiad are normally from class XII. Dipartaka achievement is creditable,” added Singh.
