Numerous rounds reduce vacant IIT seats

MUMBAI: As the IITs closed their gates for the upcoming academic year, it was clear that holding multiple rounds of admission reduced the number of vacant seats.

If all the students who were allotted a seat in the third or the last round to join the programme, the tech schools will have a very small number of vacant seats: 15.

These unfilled seats, which are in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe category, will be transferred to the preparatory course, the annual bridge programme that speeds up backward category students who are taken in at a relaxed score.

Information from the IIT-Kanpur states that of 9,319 candidates who were initially eligible for counseling, 8,674 paid the fees. So, 645 seats were up for grabs for the second round. After the first round, 618 new candidates became eligible for admission. Of them, 339 paid the registration fee. In all, 9,013 candidates confirmed their admission and 291 new candidates were given a seat in the third round.

"They will now pay their registration fee at the respective institutes. The total allotted seats after the third round of counseling is 9,304. There is no vacant seat in the general category or among the OBCs," said S Choudhary, JEE-2011 chairman.

However, there could be a possibility that some students paid the fees might not turn up. Similarly, some who were allotted a seat in the third round may not pay their fees, said IIT-Guwahati director Gautam Barua.

But he added that conducting three rounds of admissions was a good idea.

For in 2009, 1,001 seats could not be filled under various quotas. It was this paper that campaigned for a second round of admission, which the IITs conducted last year. Again, in 2010, about 100 seats remained unfilled after the admission process closed. They were transferred to the preparatory course.
