MANGALORE: The National Institutes of Technology (NITs), especially those in North-Eastern states, have literally bagged round one in terms of students reporting there after first round of seat allotment process in AIEEE online counselling-2011 that ended on July 2. Established NITs down south, especially those at Surathkal, Warangal and Trichy which students placed high on their wish-list of institutions when counselling started, have sluggish reporting.
Despite this trend, the overall percentage of students reporting to institutions allotted to them in 2011 after first round is 67%, up from 50% last year. Describing this as fairly good, Central Counselling Board (CCB) AIEEE 2011 coordinator G Srinikethan said 12,142 students against 18,411 seats available in first round reported to their respective institutions. Out of the 18,411 seats, 124 were vacant for want of category candidates and choices filled by them.
In all, CCB in the first round allotted 18,287 seats to 2,00,148 students, who cracked the AIEEE-2011 and were eligible for seat allocation in 30 NITs, 5 IIITs, and 13 state/centrally funded institutions. For B Arch, the allotment made in first round was 927 against 930 seats available. Srinikethan told TOI that 5,948 students out of 18,287, who were allotted seats in first round of counselling did not report, and one withdrew from the counselling.
On reasons for students not reporting to established NITs, Srinikethan said most AIEEE toppers invariably would have got seats in IITs. This explains reporting percentages after first round of allotment at NIT, Warangal, languishing at 36, Trichy at 48 and Surathkal at 57. On the other hand, NIT Sikkim has recorded 85% of the students allotted seats in round one reporting there. In all, 73 out of 80 students have reported to NIT, Sikkim, he noted.
Besides, the total number of seats in new NITs is less compared to the established ones, where seats tend to fill up faster as rounds in online counselling progress. The average reporting of 67% for first round is mainly due to care taken by CCB HQ at NITK, Surathkal, not to clash with the IIT counselling process. Students opting for IIT over NIT based is not a new phenomenon, Srinikethan said, adding that this trend is has been there for quite some time now.
Electronics and computer science branches too emerged clear favourites among students in round one of counselling, with 25% students each opting for these branches. Mechanical branch found favour with 20% of the students, and 15% chose electrical. The remaining branches such as mining, metallurgy did not have too many takers in the initial rounds, he said. The reporting against second round of seats allotted on July 5 would go up July 10.
