The JEE Advanced 2016 Cutoff was the minimum qualifying percentage of marks that the candidates required for inclusion in the JEE Advanced Common Merit List (CML). The JEE Advanced Cutoff was typically set at a level that was consistent with the overall performance of candidates in the Pre-engineering entrance test. Apart from the performance of candidates, the passing cutoff score was determined by various other factors such as the number of candidates who qualified the JEE Main Exam and appeared for the JEE Advanced Exam, the total number of seats that are available for admissions in the IITs and the ISM, the perceived level of difficulty of the test and the cutoff of the previous year etc. Candidates were required to satisfy both the subject-wise as well as the aggregate cutoff to be included in a rank list. The aggregate marks or cutoff was based on the sum of scores of candidates obtained in the subjects of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. For each category, a separate Merit List was prepared on the basis of the JEE Advanced 2016 Cutoff.

Tie-breaking rules that will be applicable in the ranking of candidates:

Candidates were assigned a merit rank as per their aggregate scores. The higher the aggregate marks scored by a candidate, the better was the rank that was assigned to the candidate.

In instances where two candidates had scored the same aggregate marks, candidates with a better score in Mathematics was eligible for a higher ranking

In instances where two candidates had secured the same aggregate marks and their scores in the subject of Mathematics was similar, their marks in the subject of Physics was considered for allotting a rank to them

JEE Advanced 2016 Cutoff – Previous Year Rank List for Preparatory Courses

If the number of candidates in the OPEN-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC, SC-PwD, ST or ST-PwD Rank Lists is <= 1.4 times the number of seats that are available for the corresponding categories, then a rank list for preparatory courses will be compiled. Candidates, whose names have not been enlisted in the aforesaid rank lists, will be included in the rank list that is prepared for preparatory courses. The candidate will have to, however, satisfy all the cut-offs that have been specified to be included in this rank list, as indicated below:
