IIT JEE 2012 FAQ's

Q1. What is the eligibility criteria?

Ans. The eligibility criteria is as follows:

1. Date of Birth

The date of birth of candidates belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories should be on or after October 01, 1986. Whereas the date of birth of those belonging to SC, ST and PD categories should be on or after October 01, 1981.

2. Year of passing Qualifying Examination (QE)

A candidate must have passed the QE for the first time on or after October 01, 2009 or will be appearing in 2012. Those who are going to appear in the QE later than October 1, 2012 are not eligible to apply for IIT JEE 2012.

3. Minimum Percentage of Marks in QE

Candidates belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in their QE. Whereas, those belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the QE.

Q2. What is the exam pattern like?

Ans. The exam pattern is:

  • There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration in IIT JEE 2012.Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
  • Questions in these  papers will be of objective type. Which are answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS – Optical Response Sheet).
  • There is negative marking for wrong answers.
  • The candidate can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi.

Q5. What is the last date for receipt of application forms?

Ans. Last date of receipt duly completed application forms at IITs: December 2011

Q6. When is the entrance exam?

Ans. The exam in the month of April 2012

Q7. When are the results expected?

Ans. The results are expected around last week of May 2012.

Q8. Is it a state level exam or an All-India level exam?

Ans. It is an All-India level exam

Q9. How many IITs are there?

  • Ans.There are fifteen IITs at present, located in Bhubaneswar, Bombay (Mumbai), Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras (Chennai), Mandi, Patna, Punjab, Rajasthan and Roorkee.

Q11. What is the online application procedure?

Ans. For online submission of application, candidates can pay the application fee through NEFT or through challan of selected banks.
The application fee for on-line mode is Rs. 450/- for ST/SC/PD/FEMALE candidates and Rs.900/- for all other candidates.

Q12.What is the offline application procedure?

Ans. A candidate can buy an application form with Information Brochure from any one of the designated branches of banks  by paying Rs.500/- for SC/ST/PD/FEMALE candidates (Light YELLOW Envelope) or Rs.1000/- for all other candidates (WHITE envelope). The information brochure contains details regarding application procedure, syllabus of JEE, examination cities, courses available at various institute for structure and additional information about IIT JEE 2012.

Q13. From where can the application form be purchased?

Ans. List of designated branches of various banks of each IIT zone for the purchase of information brochure and application form.
