As the results of most of the competitive examinations are out, many students who want to give themselves yet another chance at IITJEE/AIEEE want to know if they should take a drop or not. Last year my son and I had to take a similar decision. So here is my experience on it. You need to consider all the points mentioned here to decide if you want to/should take a drop or not.
1. What was you score and where did you stand in competitive exams this time? Was the result expected or unexpected? Based on your score this year, can you say that this score reflected your efforts and your intelligence level?
2. Do you know what were the mistakes that you committed while preparing for the exams this year? Were there any shortcomings on your part? I am talking of three main things here - basic understanding of the subject to the core, thoroughness in the subject (Did you complete at least one book on the subject - both theory wise and problem wise) and ability to solve the new problems. You need to find out where you lacked, because until and unless you do that, there is no point in taking a drop and doing the same things over again. Albert Einstein once said "Insanity is doing the same things again and again while expecting different results." If do the same things that you did this year, you will not end up where you are as of now, instead your position will be worse. Remember competition is intensifying.
3. Supportive atmosphere. Do you have friends and a family that would support you in your decisions? Take it from me, that it counts the most. Do they have the ability to keep you motivated and running? Do they understand the kind of burden you are about to load yourself with? Will they keep the TV switched off during the year and will they keep social meetings to minimum? Will they cheer you up whenever will feel rotten? Will they accept that you may not fair better this time as well? In summary, do you feel that they are proud of you as of now? Or is their pride related to your IITJEE rankings? Most of your friends will leave for colleges soon and you will be left alone with your family. So think about that!
4. Your own commitment and energy level. One year is too long a time. You may feel right now that you will make it through a year, but repeating the same course again is not a joke. It takes commitment to maintain the same energy level throughout the year - right upto 12 th April 2011.
5. Do you know that if you start working hard right now, most probably you will burn-out in month of December. You will feel as if you have done everything and now you don't need to do anything else or at its extreme you will be too exhausted or too bored with solving the same problems again and again. Do you have someone to remind you then, that hard work is never enough and you never can't solve enough problems. Do you have someone to remind you that in this marathon race, maintaining the momentum in the last lap is extremely important?
6. Do you have a plan. Which books you will use this time? Which of them for conceptualization and which ones for problem solving? Do you have someone (A coaching institute or a teacher or your parent) who may solve the problems that you may face or clear any doubts that you may have. Have you made a broad plan about when you will be able to finish this book or a particular section? What will you do next? Do you have the ability to stick to your plans till the very end?
7. Do you know how you will evaluate yourself as you move ahead? If you have decided to take a drop, have you started studying again? If not you are a little behind those who already have.
Most of the times, its a lone journey and a painful one. But the rewards that await you, if you are committed are great as well. Remember no pains, no gains.
