Navigating Officer


A Navigating officer will be responsible for the navigation of ships, loading and discharging of cargo, maintenance of ships, safety of passengers and crew and observance of various national and international codes of conduct.
To become a navigating officer one has to do a course of diploma in nautical science. Admission is taken after 10+2. Top few collages offering this course are T. S. Chanakaya, New Mumbai (admission through IIT JEE), LBS Collage Mumbai and International Maritime Academy Chennai. Apart from these collage there are number of courses offered by various shipyards, Shipping companies and private collages in collaboration with shipping companies. One can expect to earn a starting salary USD 400-900  & can reach up to USD 10,000 – 18000 pm depending upon the company and type of ship.  One can also move to shore jobs once you get sufficient experience.
Marine Engineer Officer

To keep a ship moving all the time out on the high seas falls in the gamut of the Marine Engineer on board a ship. It is no mean achievement to carry out this job, given the harsh conditions at sea with the vagaries of the weather. Working on a stable platform on solid ground, it is easy to maintain and run machinery. But with the ship rolling forty degrees on either side, it becomes a herculean task to run the main engine of a massive ship. The Marine Engineer needs to be proficient in the areas of Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineering.

To become a marine engineer officer one has to do a course of marine engineering or mechanical engineering with 1 year pre sea training. Admission is taken after 10+2. Top few collages offering this course are Marine engineering and research institute, Kolkata (admission through IIT JEE), Marine engineering and research institute, Mumbai, Tolani maritime institute, International Maritime Academy Chennai. Apart from these collage there are number of courses offered by various shipyards, Shipping companies and private collages in collaboration with shipping companies which provide 1 year Pre Sea training to mechanical engineer. Is there any difference between B.S.(Marine Engg.),
B.E.(Marine Engg.) or B.Tech. (Marine Engg.) as
many colleges are offering this degree in above
mentioned names? Please guide me. Thanks.
