Q1 When are the application forms available?
Ans 1 Every year for the batch commencing in August, the application forms are available on the website as well as at TMI counter and select Axis Bank branches from 1st week of January.
Q2 I have appeared for class XII exam this year. The results are not yet declared. Can I still fill up the form and appear in TMISAT?
Ans 2 Yes. You can fill the form leaving the space for class XII marks blank. The class XII marks are required to be intimated by fax or online as soon as the results are declared. Candidate will become ineligible in case he/she scores less than 60% marks in PCM and the Form fees in such cases will also be non-refundable.
Q3 I do not have a printer. Can I get a printed form so that I can send it to TMI by mail?
Ans 3 Yes. TMI application forms are available at select branches of Axis Bank on payment of fees as applicable. The form can be filled manually and sent to TMI along with the necessary documents.
Q4 I am appearing for BITSAT, do I still have to fill the TMI form?
Ans 4 Yes.
Q5 I am appearing in BITSAT. Do I have to appear in TMISAT also?
Ans 5 The choice is yours. If you are appearing in BITSAT as well as TMISAT, better of the two scores will be considered. If you do not appear in TMISAT, the BITSAT score will be considered on producing the score card.
Q6 What is the syllabus for TMISAT?
Ans 6 The test is based on 11th and 12th CBSE standard Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics syllabus plus English grammar, vocabulary and Logical & Analytical reasoning. As this is online objective type test, there are no previous year question banks available.
Q7 Is there any negative marking in the test?
Ans 7 No.
Q8 What is the difference between the online test conducted in April and in June?
Ans 8 There is no difference in the tests. Merit list is common.
Q9 Can I appear in TMISAT in April as well as in June?
Ans 9 No. You can appear in the test only once in a year.
Q10 When are TMISAT results declared?
Ans 10 Marks scored in the test are seen immediately on the screen after completing the test.
Q11 Are CET / IIT JEE marks considered for admission?
Ans 11 No.
Q12 Do I have to appear in IIT exam for admission in TMI?
Ans 12 No. You have to appear in TMI entrance test or BITSAT.
Q13 I have secured less than 60% marks in PCM, but aggregate is more than 60%. Am I eliglible for admission?
Ans 13 Even if you apply knowing that you have less than 60% marks, you will not be considered for admission
Q14 I have completed B.Sc. degree. Am I eligible for admission to B.S. M.E. or B.S.N.T.?
Ans 14 You will be eligible for application in either of the programmes if you are less than 21 years on 1st Sept. of the year of admission and you have secured at least 60% marks in PCM group in 10+2 exam.
Q15 I have completed Diploma in Engg., can I apply for the courses in TMI?
Ans 15 No. The admissions are based only on 10+2 marks.
Q16 I have completed one year of the BSME/BSNT course in some other Institute. Can I get admission in the second year at TMI?
Ans 16 No. University rules do not permit this.
Q17 Does the Institute conduct GME course?
Ans 17 No.

Q21 When is the Medical Test conducted? Can I get it done from my local doctor?
Ans 21 The Medical Test is conducted after the online test and needs to be done by a DGS and TMI approved doctor only. The names and addresses of doctors will be given by the TMI office after you are shortlisted. It is preferable that candidates get their screening test done by any doctor, as per standards laid down, to avoid disappointment at a later stage.
Q22 Is the correction in eyesight by laser surgery allowed?
Ans 22 Yes, if it corrects your vision to 6/6 without glasses.

Q28 Are the courses approved by the government?

Q29 What is the difference between B.S. and B.E./B.Tech.?
Ans 29 The difference is only in the nomenclature. All BITS programmes conducted on BITS campus are named B.E. and all off-campus programmes are termed as B.S. All are technical degrees.
Q30 What is the difference between B.S.Nautical Technology and B.Sc. Nautical Science?
Ans 30 In BSc Nautical Science programme,done elsewhere, the academic subjects are basic science subjects. The Nautical subjects are covered along with these subjects. B.Sc. degree programme is of 3 years duration. The student has to complete one year of sea service and appear for Second Mate's Examination.
In B.S Nautical Technology programme, done at TMI, all the Basic Engineering subjects of first year Engineering like Applied Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Workshop Technology, Hydraulics, Engineering Materials, Electronics, Applied Electricity and Engineering Mathematics, Geometrical Drawing are covered. Along with the Basic Engineering subjects, Nautical subjects are also covered. The course is of four years duration. Three years are in the campus and one year is ship board training. The student is also evaluated on his performance during shipboard training. After obtaining the degree, the student can appear for Second Mate's Examination. For all round development, Management and Humanities subjects are also covered. For practical skill training, the student is given special training in welding and training on Bridge, Liquid cargo handling , GMDSS and steering simulators. This course develops a deck officer with a strong engineering base. Since the student has learnt all basic engineering subjects, he will have no difficulty in operating specialised ships with the latest technology. The student can do higher studies in any stream.
Q31 What is the difference between Presea (DNS - IMU) course?
Ans 31 This is alternate avenue to join Deck side Officer stream. DNS - IMU course is of one year duration. The student completes 18 months of sea service and appears for Second Mate's examination. He has also to appear for 3rd, 4th and 5th Semester examination conducted by IMU. On successful completion of all examinations, he will be awarded B.Sc. Nautical Science degree by Indian Maritime University. TMI inducts 120 company sponsored students in this program which commences early August each year. One has to appear in IMU entrance test. Q32 After applying for BS Marine Engg. course, can I change the choice to BS Nautical Technology or vice-versa?
Ans 32 Yes, you can do so till the time of personal interviews. However your vision has to be 6/6 for admission in BS Nautical technology course and you have to clear the eyesight test conducted by the MMD.
Q33 What is the difference between Marine Engg. and Nautical Technology courses?
Ans 33 Marine Engg. course trains you for the engine side of the ship while the Nautical Technology course trains you for the deck or navigation and cargo handling side.
Q34 Which course is better – Marine Engg. or Nautical Technology?
Ans 34 Both courses lead to rewarding careers in shipping industry. It is individual choice to work on the deck or engine side.
Campus Facilities
Q35 What is the difference between the salaries of Marine Engineers and Deck Officers?
Ans 35 Engineers as well as Deck Officers (Navigation) earn almost equally.
Q36 Is the profession safe for girls?
Ans 36 Yes, there are many successful woman seafarers across globe of foreign nationalities as well as Indians. Over the years more than 40 girls have joined TMI.
Q37 Is staying in hostel compulsory? Is there a separate hostel for girls?
Ans 37 Yes. Both the courses are compulsorily residential courses. Girls do not have separate hostel, however, a separate wing has been created in one of the hostels.
Internship & Placements
Q38 Are students allowed to have their vehicles on campus?
Ans 38 Students are not allowed to keep four / two wheelers on campus. Bicycles may be used.
Q39 Are monbile phones and personal laptops allowed on campus?
Ans 39 Mobile phones are not allowed on campus except in the academic area. Personal laptops are allowed. Majority of the hostel area has wi-fi connectivity.
Q40 Can we visit the campus to see the facilities?
Ans 40 Yes. The working hours are 0900 hrs - 1630 hrs from Mon.to Fri. and 0900 hrs to 1300 hrs on Saturdays. You may visit the campus preferable with prior appointment. Campus tours are conducted when parents/candidates are called on campus for interviews in end June / early July.
Q41 What are the sports facilities on campus?

Q42 Are placement interviews done on campus?
Ans 42 Yes. Most of the globally renowned shipping companies come to TMI campus for selection of students for both engine and deck sides. Such tests / interviews are normally held between second and third year of the programme. As per our experience, about 90% of eligible students find placements by the time they finish the third year of the programme.
Q43 Is there any connection between internship and final placements?
Ans 43 Yes. Onboard internship leads to final placement in the same company. Change of companies is normally not encouraged at early stage of career.
Q44 Is there any stipend paid during the internship period? If yes, how much?
Ans 44 Yes. All the shipping companies pay stipend during the onboard internship period. The amount varies from company to company. At present, stipends during internship vary from USD 300 per month to USD 900 per month.
Q45 Which companies visit campus for selection?

Q46 Is the placement guaranteed?
Ans 46 Placements are related to performance. Over the years, all eligible TMI graduates have secured placements in well known companies by the time they finish third year of the programme.
Q47 Are there any shore job opportunities for TMI graduates?
Ans 47 Yes. There are shore based job opportunities in any industry associated with engines, boilers, hydraulic systems or process control machinery. It is not necessary for engineers to join ship after the course. Some students, though small in number, have joined shore jobs as Design / Seismic / Maintenance Engineers or have taken up jobs as Trainee Surveyors. Nautical as well as engineers also have openings in Chartering / Ship Brokerage firms.
